52 Weeks of Greatness: Week 5 – Comfort Zones
Welcome to Week 5 of the 52 Weeks of Greatness. Today’s topic is “Comfort Zones”.
Many of us live our lives in our own comfort zones fearing change and the unknown. We convince ourselves that it is better to stay where we are rather than venture away from the things we know and are comfortable with. What many of us don’t realize is the truly successful people, those that achieve their goals make quick decisions, take risks and are master implementers. They always leave their comfort zone so they can explore opportunities and adventures.
So I challenge each of you to take a small step towards making positive change in your life and leave your comfort zone. It can be something grand or something small…. Do something different, try something new, meet a new friend, learn a new skill or call somebody that you have been afraid to call… whatever the task may be, the goal is to explore new opportunities and leave your comfort zone.
I leave you with this poem, the author is unknown and it is called “The Comfort Zone” (wow, see how things come together)
I used to have a comfort zone
where I knew I couldn’t fail
The same four walls of busy work
Were really more like jail.
I’d long so much to do the things
I’d never done before,
But I stayed inside my comfort zone
And paced the same old floor.
I said it didn’t matter
That I wasn’t doing much,
I said I didn’t care for things
Like diamonds or furs and such.
I claimed to be so busy
With things inside my zone,
But deep inside I longed for
Something special of my own.
I couldn’t let my life go by
Just watching others win,
I held my breath and stepped outside
To let the change begin
I took a step and with new strength
I’d never felt before,
I kissed my comfort zone goodbye
And closed and locked the door.
If you are in a comfort zone
Afraid to venture out,
Remember that all winners
Were at one time filled with doubt.
A step or two and words of praise
Can make your dreams come true,
Greet your future with a smile,
Success is there for you!
52 Weeks of Greatness: Week 4 – Attitudes
Your attitude is what you project to the world based upon your values and beliefs. You will have a positive attitude towards other people if you have strong, positive values and beliefs and you will create a positive energy and will be like a magnet to people who will be drawn to you because you are positive, successful and happy.
Every successful person has their own set of challenges but rather than dwell on the limitations or focus on the negatives, people with positive attitudes can face their challenges in a positive way and always search for the good or the lesson to be learned in every challenge. Their positive attitude is what propels them forward and why they are successful. Read the rest of this entry »
52 Weeks of Greatness: Week 3 – Planning
“People don’t plan to fail, they just fail to plan”
According to a recent study, most people believe that having goals is important to achieving success but more than half of them do not feel prepared to develop a plan to achieve their desired results. The obstacles reported were:
• Not knowing how to get started
• Deciding what their goals should be
• Fear of failure
Planning is a critical element in the goal attainment process for both long term and short term goals. It is the activity of setting the direction and defining the set of tasks, deadlines and resources that will help you reach an objective. A good plan should be considered an essential element to goal achievement and will pay off by creating direction, excitement and motivation.
It is a process that when followed, will yield your desired results. Read the rest of this entry »
52 Weeks of Greatness – Week 2: Discipline
Why are some people more successful than others?
Did you ever wonder why so many seem to have more success than others? Why some people make more money, have happy marriages, accomplish more in their careers? I myself grew up from humble beginnings, the daughter of a single mother raising three kids in a 700 square foot row home outside Philadelphia.
I remember watching my mother stay up late sitting at the dining room table (the only table we had in the house), finishing her homework because she was determined to finish her education and obtain her college degree. All the while, working a full time job and selling real estate to keep food on the table and of course, provide for us the best she could. No matter how tired she was, how miserable she felt or how difficult her children could be at times (myself excluded, of course since I was the perfect child), she was always at that dining room table working on her assignments.
With fierce determination and self discipline, my mother achieved her goal of getting her college degree and was successful at changing her life simply be staying committed to reaching her goal. As with anything in life, her actions set events into motion that resulted in all three of us kids continuing on to achieve our own college degrees, become successful in our careers, our relationships and our overall happiness. My mother’s discipline taught us the importance of really working hard for what you want and if you do, it can be yours. Even with all the challenges and obstacles, she taught us to stay focused, appreciate everything around us and continue to work on what we want until we get it! Read the rest of this entry »
52 Weeks of Greatness – Week 1: Dedication
Aim High, Use Powerful Resolve, and Stand Firm
As we enter a new year and commit to our professional and personal resolutions there is one word that comes to mind: Dedication. Dedication is focusing your energy and all of your efforts on a task or to a particular course of action until they are complete. No exceptions and no matter what challenges or obstacles we must overcome.
When you think of professional athletes, mega stars or business icons; you naturally think of success and achievement. What most people don’t realize is the journey that all of those folks had to take to get to where they are today included obstacles, challenges and hard times. All of them started exactly where you are now and did not get to where they are simply because of skill, talent or luck but with a combination of those things led by fierce determination and a commitment to making things happen.
