Public Relations Marketing

Excerpt from On Target: The Book on Marketing Plans by Tim Berry and Doug Wilson

Public Relations involves a variety of programs designed to maintain or enhance a company’s image and the products and services it offers. Successful implementation of an effective public relations strategy can be a critical component to a marketing plan.

A public relations (PR) strategy may play a key role in an organization’s promotional strategy. A planned approach to leveraging public relations opportunities can be just as important as advertising and sales promotions. Public relations is one of the most effective methods to communicate and relate to the market. It is powerful and, once things are in motion, it is the most cost effective of all promotional activities. In some cases, it is free.

52 Weeks of Greatness – Week 6 – Put Me in Coach

Welcome to Week 6 of the 52 Weeks of Greatness.  Today’s topic is about the Superhero Syndrome

How many times have you found yourself frustrated or overwhelmed trying to figure out a problem, come up with a solution or learn something new?  Many times we put so much pressure on ourselves to be independent and to show the world, our teams and our boss that “we can do it” but the reality is, we are struggling.

How many times have you agreed to take on new tasks, projects and assignments with the intention of impressing your peers or your boss, only to be overwhelmed and frustrated because you can’t meet all of your deadlines.

Do you find yourself juggling family, life, work, friends, commitments, a long to- do list, hundreds of emails, phone calls, texts, blackberries…..you know because you can do it all!

This is called the Superhero Syndrome.

We all try to take on way too much at times and unlike Superman, we are not built to go at it alone.  We are not faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive or able to leap tall buildings with a single bound.  We are human beings each with our own flaws and limitations.  Too many times, I have seen people spin their wheels, often spending hours upon hours trying to find the answers rather than ask for help.

So I am encouraging all of you to do two things:

1)       Raise your hand and ask for help when you needed.  Your boss and co-workers are not going to think less of you for needing help and most people I know would be honored to be asked.  So don’t try to conquer the world on your own…  bring an army with you.

2)     Look around at your co-workers, do you notice somebody struggling?  Is there a way you can help out?   Most times people just need to be shown a fantastic trick, tip or technique so if you discovered a faster way of doing something… share it with the others.

And remember this, if you cannot meet your deadlines because you have too much on your plate, you need to tell your boss and together you can work out a solution.  Otherwise, you are setting yourself, the project and your team up for failure and we all want success!

Until next week….
